Personalized Game Therapy

Individuals with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have deficits in emotion recognition abilities. 1 in 68 children in the United States has been diagnosed with an ASD, and this figure is likely to increase. Affected individuals are often socially isolated, as they may converse inappropriately without comprehending their error. Failure to recognize emotion can lead to a lifetime of isolation, depression, and possibly even suicide. Current therapy approaches are limited and not personalized to each individual child's needs. Our novel EMotion RECognition solution, or EMREC, will provide personalized game therapy to each user. Using Machine Learning algorithms, EMREC will determine the emotional content of conversations recorded using a smart wristband and will detect any emotional dissonance between participants. Later in the day, the affected individual will play a personalized therapy game that will teach the individual how to recognize the particular emotions that he or she expressed deficits in throughout the day. With EMREC, an individual on the autism spectrum will hopefully have a happier and more socially integrated life.
